Question:

409 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans he has to deal with the teaching of autistic children at second level; if he has considered the provision of outreach classes; if so, if he has investigated the provision of training for teachers in such instances; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10590/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 406, 407 and 409 together.

A very small number of teachers at primary and second level will work with pupils who present with autism. It is considered that the most appropriate way to meet their training needs is through the provision of specialised courses for teachers at postgraduate level.

The question of the provision and delivery of support services for all categories of pupils with special educational needs at both primary and second level, including those with autism, is under active consideration within my Department.
