In 1998 the waterways service of my department carried out a preliminary study on the possibility of extending the navigation south of Belturbet to Lough Oughter and Killeshandra.
The estimated cost of this project, depending on the design option selected, varied from £13 million to £19 million pounds at January 1998 prices. With the limited resources available for waterway's development it was not practical to commit funds to the additional studies required and to the detailed design of the project.
