Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Enda Kenny

Question:

162 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the number of full-time archaeologists employed by Duchás; the number of archaeologists who work on a contract basis; the nature of the contracts and renewal periods that are offered; the number of other archaeologists who are contracted in a private capacity to do work for Duchás; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11215/00]

A total of 13 professional archaeologists are assigned to the archaeological service of my Department. In addition 17 archaeologists are employed on a contract basis. These are contracts for service and are renewed on a three month basis as necessary. In addition two colleges are engaged by Dúchas to carry out survey work as the need arises and from time to time commissions are awarded to undertake excavation and-or post-excavation work at Dúchas managed sites.
