Vol. 518 No. 1

Written Answers. - Drug Treatment Services.

Dan Neville

Question:

177 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason a person (details supplied) in Limerick prison had treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder discontinued; the person who decided that this should take place; and if he will make a statement on the details of a letter sent to him by the person's father (details supplied). [11152/00]

The person referred to by the Deputy was committed to Limerick Prison on 8 December 1999. He is serving a ten month sentence and is due for release with remission on 23 July 2000.

As the Deputy is aware, it is long-standing policy not to comment in detail on the case of any individual prisoner and in particular on their medical records which are confidential to that prisoner and the medical officer. I do not propose to make an exception in this case. I can inform the Deputy, however, that the medication was discontinued by the prison medical officer on the advice of the relevant Mid-Western Health Board consultant psychiatrist and the prison psychiatrist.
