Vol. 518 No. 1

Written Answers. - Broadcasting Policy.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

71 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the different but central role she envisages RTE will play in the future in view of her speech of 4 March 2000; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10892/00]

In the speech referred to in the question I stated that I wanted to ensure that RTE achieves as significant a role in this new century as it did in the last. In recognising that the role of the national broadcaster will continue to be both central and significant, although different, I was both confirming my commitment to the concept of public service broadcasting and recognising that the environment in which the national broadcaster will continue to exist is an environment that is subject to constant and rapid change.
