Vol. 518 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Parks.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

86 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will confirm that funding will not be provided in the future for the provision of proper landing facilities on the Blasket Islands; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10745/00]

Following on the Supreme Court decision in July 1999, which declared An Blascaod Mhór National Historic Park Act, 1989 to be invalid, the 1989 Act is no longer available to me to facilitate the provision of improved landing facilities on the Great Blasket Island. The current position is that future policy in relation to the Great Blasket Island, taking into account a whole range of issues including the provision of improved landing facilities, is being reviewed. Future policy has to be considered in the context of the overall demands and priorities on the heritage services of my Department having full regard to the limited resources available for such purposes. I am not in a position to comment on the question of future funding for landing facilities on the Great Blasket Island at this time.
