Vol. 518 No. 1

Written Answers. - Job Creation.

Ulick Burke

Question:

100 Mr. U. Burke asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the position on her efforts to find a new employment opportunity for Ballinasloe, County Galway, in view of the recent job losses in the towns and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11045/00]

A special inter-agency group was established in February 2000 to examine and respond to the needs of the employees of AT Cross and to promote job creation in Ballinasloe. The focus of the group is to seek to assist in the attraction and generation of new businesses to the area. The group has met on four occasions to date.

AT Cross is co-operating fully with the inter-agency group and is assisting IDA Ireland to market the facility for a new industry. Prior to and since the establishment of the inter-agency group in February 2000, there has been a number of IDA site visits to Ballinasloe and the IDA is hopeful that a positive outcome will emerge from the increased marketing focus on the town.

IDA Ireland has recently developed a 39 acre business park in Ballinasloe and work has been completed on a 27,000 sq. ft advance factory which is now available for marketing.

Enterprise Ireland recently co-ordinated an enterprise evening, on behalf of the inter-agency group, with the view to stimulating potential business entrepreneurship. In addition to Enterprise Ireland, the following were present: FÁS, Galway City & County Enterprise Board, Leader, Westbic, Teagasc, Ireland West Tourism, VEC and the Chamber of Commerce.
