Vol. 518 No. 3

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Payments.

Question:

229 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the number of asylum seekers claiming rent allowance in each Dublin postal district; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11802/00]

At present there are 5,442 payments of basic supplementary welfare allowance, SWA, and 847 payments of unemployment assistance being made to asylum seekers in the Dublin area. In addition, there is a small number of asylum seekers in receipt of one parent family payment.

It is estimated that 4,600 of these asylum seekers are also in receipt of a rent supplement. The remainder are residing in emergency accommodation such as B and Bs.

The total number of asylum seekers claiming rent in each of Dublin's postal areas is shown in the following table.
