Vol. 518 No. 6

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Jack Wall

Question:

549 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide funding for a language class for children with language disorders at a school (details supplied) in County Kildare where the board of management and the teaching staff are willing to provide such a class; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12430/00]

I am aware that a number of pupils in the Kildare area have been identified as requiring placement in a special class for specific speech and language disorders. I am also aware that the school to which the Deputy refers has expressed an interest in becoming involved in such provision.

My Department's inspectorate is currently investigating the most suitable location in the Kildare area in which to base such provision. The possibility of developing the service in the school to which the Deputy refers will be considered in this context.
The establishment of a special class to cater for children with specific speech and language disorders will require the availability of a speech therapy service from the south western area health board. My Department will liaise with the health authorities in relation to this matter.
