Vol. 519 No. 3

Written Answers - Local Authority Boundaries.

Jim Higgins

Question:

194 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when it is expected that a decision on the extension of urban boundaries, with particular reference to Letterkenny, County Donegal, will be announced. [13926/00]

Under the provisions of Part V of the Local Government Act, 1991, and the associated regulations, it is open at any time to an individual local authority to adopt a proposal to alter its boundary for administrative purposes. Before submitting a formal application to the Minister under part V, the authority must first invite submissions both from the general public and from the other authorities concerned – Part V was brought into operation in 1996. The UDC was asked by the Department in 1996 to resubmit an earlier proposal, but under the new 1991 Act provisions. I have not received any such application in relation to the alteration of the Letterkenny urban district boundary.
