Vol. 519 No. 3

Written Answers - Naval Service Vessels.

Willie Penrose

Question:

51 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Defence if all asbestos has now been removed from all naval service vessels; the medical advice or assistance made available to personnel who may have been in contact with the asbestos; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13686/00]

Following a survey of the older vessels of the Naval Service fleet, a small quantity of asbestos was found in the machinery spaces of the four offshore patrol vessels – le Deirdre, le Emer, le Aoife and le Aisling.

In December 1999, specialist firms were contracted to remove the hazardous material under the supervision of a firm of environmental consultants. The work was carried out in late December 1999 and early January 2000. The asbestos was removed in accordance with stan dards approved by the Health and Safety Authority. A clean air certificate was then issued by the consultants and the vessels resumed fishery patrols.
Ships companies of the patrol vessels have been advised on all known health risks relating to exposure to asbestos. In addition, all Naval Service personnel are screened for asbestos related illness as part of their annual medical examination.
This matter was given top priority in my Department. I am satisfied that the issue was resolved as speedily as possible and in line with health and safety requirements.
