Written Answers - Overseas Missions.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

66 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Defence the investigations held into the accident in the Lebanon on 14 February 2000 in which four soldiers, serving with the UNIFIL, died; when he expects to have results from these investigations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13680/00]

As I indicated in my reply to the House on 28 March 2000, the following investigations were undertaken into the accident which occurred on 14 February 2000, which resulted in the tragic deaths of Pte. Declan Deere, Pte. Brendan Fitzpatrick, Pte. Matthew Lawlor, and Pte. John Murphy: UNIFIL board of inquiry; Irish Contingent board of inquiry; and a Lebanese police inquiry

The UNIFIL board of inquiry and the Irish Contingent board of inquiry have been completed. A copy of the UNIFIL board of inquiry has been requested from the UN through the Department of Foreign Affairs. The Lebanese police inquiry is still ongoing.
