Vol. 519 No. 4

Written Answers. - Road Accidents.

John Browne

Question:

118 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of fatal accidents involving cars each of the years since 1995; and the ages of the cars involved. [14036/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that detailed statistics in relation to fatal and serious injury accidents are provided by the National Roads Authority, St. Martin's House, Waterloo Road, Dublin 4. Details in relation to all road accidents reported to the Garda Síochána are supplied by the Garda to the National Roads Authority and a detailed report, entitled Road Accident Facts, Ireland, is prepared and published by that authority. The most recent report is in respect of 1998.

I am further informed by the Garda authorities that information on the age of cars involved in fatal accidents is not readily available and could only be obtained by the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of staff time and resources.
