Vol. 519 No. 4

Written Answers. - UN Conventions.

Dan Neville

Question:

56 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs to outline the progress in the ratification of the UN convention against torture. [13961/00]

The Criminal Justice (United Nations Convention Against Torture) Bill, 1998, which, when enacted, will enable Ireland to ratify the UN Convention Against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, was passed by Seanad Éireann in July 1999. It passed all Stages in the Dáil on 17 May. Amendments made to the Bill in the Dáil must now be agreed by the Seanad. I expect the Bill to be enacted shortly and the procedure for ratification of the convention will begin immediately upon enactment.
