184 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of hospital surgical beds currently available; the way in which this compares on a population basis with other European countries; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14733/00]
The following table provides the most up to date breakdown available of the average number of in-patient beds available in acute public hospitals by specialty.
Comparisons of the number of surgical beds across the European Union member states are not available. This is because hospitals exercise flexibility in the use of their overall bed stock on a daily basis according to demand and the number of surgical beds available fluctuates.
The Deputy will be aware that the Government is committed in the programme for prosperity and fairness to a review of bed capacity in both the acute and non-acute settings. The review has now commenced and is being conducted by my Department in conjunction with the Department of Finance, and in consultation with the social partners. The review is of critical importance in the context of assessing the capacity of the hospital system.
