Vol. 519 No. 6

Written Answers. - Accident and Emergency Services.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

196 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of victims of road accidents attending accident and emergency and outpatient departments in each of the years from 1996 to 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14753/00]

The information requested by the Deputy is not routinely collected by my Department. My Department has therefore asked the regional chief executive of the eastern regional health authority and the chief executive officers of the health boards to compile the figures for their area and forward them directly to the Deputy.

However, the Deputy may wish to note that the latest figures obtained from the hospital inpatient inquiry system, in which 61 public hospitals including acute and paediatric hospitals participate, indicate that number of road traffic accident victims who were treated as inpatient cases for the years 1996, 1997 and 1998 are as follows:

1996

8,833 cases

1997

8,667 cases

1998

7,703 cases.
