Vol. 519 No. 6

Written Answers. - Proposed Legislation.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

209 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when he proposes to introduce a new Coroner's Act; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14756/00]

The Deputy will be aware that in December 1998, the Government approved my proposals to establish a working group to undertake a comprehensive review of the coroner service. Throughout 1999 and the first five months of this year, the group has examined all aspects of the service, including the Coroners Act, 1962. I understand that the group will shortly be finalising its deliberations and I expect to have its final report in due course.

I can assure the Deputy that the report of the group will, on its receipt, be examined by Government as quickly as possible. When I have particular legislative proposals, I will bring them to the Government for approval and have them published in the normal way.
