Vol. 519 No. 6

Written Answers. - Work Permits.

John McGuinness

Question:

103 Mr. McGuinness asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the reason for the delay in dealing with an application for a work permit by a person (details supplied) in County Carlow; the reason this person's original application was refused; and when her new application or appeal will be dealt with. [14613/00]

An application for a work permit on behalf of the individual concerned was received by my Department on 20 December 1999 and refused on 15 February 2000 because the individual concerned entered this country on a student visa and is, therefore, not eligible to seek employment. A student visa is issued strictly on the basis that the individual concerned is here for study purposes and is not seeking to enter the Irish workforce.

I can confirm that a new application for a work permit on behalf of the individual concerned has been received by my Department and is being examined.
