Vol. 520 No. 2

Written Answers. - Homeless Persons.

Question:

133 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the estimated number of homeless women; the number of homeless women living in Dublin; the facilities available in Dublin for hostel accommodation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15577/00]

According to the most recent local authority assessment of housing needs, which was carried out in March 1999, there were 1,399 homeless women in the country. The number of homeless women in Dublin is as follows:

Local authority

No. of homeless women

Dublin Corporation

990

Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council

29

Fingal County Council

7

South Dublin County Council

46

Total

1,072

These figures are based on a broader definition of homeless persons which includes those who have no accommodation, those in hostels and in health board accommodation and those staying with friends.
It is estimated that there are approximately 900 bed places available for homeless people in hostels in the Dublin city area. While most of the bed places are predominantly available for men, there are facilities available for homeless women. These include hostels for women only, hostels for women with children and a small number of spaces for couples.
