Vol. 520 No. 2

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 31 from Deputy Gormley. I now call on Deputy Gormley to raise the matter.

I wish to have the business of the House suspended today, Wednesday, 31 May 2000, under Standing Order 31 to debate the following issue of urgent public importance, namely, the revelation that the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development planted oil seed rape contaminated by a genetically modified variety and the need for the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development and the Department of the Environment and Local Government, with the EPA, to ensure that these crops are located and destroyed and that measures are put in place immediately to ensure no recurrence of such incidents.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider the matter to be contemplated by Standing Order 31. Therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
