Vol. 520 No. 2

Written Answers. - Aircraft Fuel Dumping.

Seán Haughey

Question:

80 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she has satisfied herself that there are adequate procedures in place to protect residents from aircraft dumping fuel while in flight. [15552/00]

I understand from the Irish Aviation Authority that because newer aircraft can land at higher weights there is less need to dump fuel in flight. In the rare case when an aircraft must dump fuel, the operation is conducted in such a way as to avoid built up areas, except in cases of exceptional emergency.

Fuel dumped in the air tends to dissipate as fine droplets and vaporizes before it falls to earth.
