82 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if her attention has been drawn to the detrimental effect predicted for the residential area of Peter's Place, Dublin 2, due to the implementations of the area 7 development of the Luas line; and if she will direct the project management team to work in partnership with the residents to facilitate a solution to these difficulties. Having considered all submissions made to me in the matter and, in particular, the report of the findings of the public inquiry, I approved a light railway order for the Sandyford to St. Stephen's Green line in September 1999.
As part of the public inquiry, the inspector, Judge Sean O'Leary, considered the impact of the proposed development on local communities. In the case of Peter's Place, the inspector concluded that, although the community would be affected by the increased activity, any adverse consequences would be minimised by the tangential nature of the interaction between the residential properties and the line. In addition, the inspector considered the properties in that area would be greatly facilitated by the addition of the new transport option.
Nevertheless, I am aware of, and sympathetic to, the concerns of the Peter's Place residents.
I understand that discussions have taken place, and are continuing, between CIE's project management team and the residents to try to resolve any difficulties. I welcome this approach.
A condition of the light railway order that I made in September 1999 is that local liaison committees must be established by CIE for each area along the construction route. The committees will represent the interests of all bodies and groups likely to be affected including the relevant local authority, the Garda Síochána, utilities, business and residential groups. CIE will establish the committee for area seven shortly and I would encourage the Peter's Place residents to become involved.
