Vol. 520 No. 4

Written Answers. - Local Government Bill.

Michael Bell

Question:

160 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if the Local Government Bill, 2000, will in any way affect the status of Drogheda Corporation as presently constituted; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16095/00]

The Local Government Bill, 2000, modernises and updates local government legislation and terminology to provide local authorities with a uniform and sound legislative foundation which takes account of the recent constitutional amendment; and introduces a range of other reforms. The position of Drogheda as an elected local authority is unchanged but will now operate within a modern legislative framework. For ceremonial and related purposes the Bill safeguards the continuation of historic royal charters.
