Vol. 520 No. 4

Written Answers. - Monaghan Bombing.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

195 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans he has to facilitate the family of a person (details supplied) killed in a bomb explosion in County Monaghan in having the matter investigated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16028/00]

Following a Government decision and at my request, former Tánaiste, John Wilson agreed to conduct a review of services and arrangements in place in this jurisdiction to meet the needs of those who had suffered as a result of violent action associated with the conflict in Northern Ireland over the past 30 years. In his report, "A Place and a Name", Mr. Wilson made a wide range of recommendations on measures which needed to be taken to acknowledge and address the sufferings of those in question.

While Mr. Wilson did not recommend an independent inquiry into the bombing referred to, one of his recommendations was that procedures should be introduced to allow families to request reports on investigations of murders, arising from the conflict in Northern Ireland over the last 30 years, where no one has been made amenable.

I am currently preparing proposals for Government on Mr. Wilson's recommendations and I hope to finalise these shortly.
