Vol. 520 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

229 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education and Science the position in relation to the allocation of a remedial teacher (details supplied) for a school in County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15845/00]

The school to which the Deputy refers has the services of a shared remedial teacher.

The Deputy will be aware that in September 1999 the remedial teaching service was extended to all primary schools with a pupil teacher ratio of 10:1 or above. Schools with lower pupil teacher ratios were advised that they could seek remedial support from my Department, where the level of their particular need warrants such a service.

All available posts were utilised in the current school year to ensure no primary school in the country should be without a remedial teaching service.

However, I can assure the Deputy that the remedial needs of the school in question will be fully considered in the event of additional resources becoming available to improve existing remedial services.
