Vol. 520 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Question:

264 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of primary school buildings which are in need of repairs; the number of schools in need of replacement through amalgamation or otherwise; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16072/00]

Question:

265 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the primary schools which have been condemned by health boards; the length of time since they were condemned in each case; if he proposes to take any action to ensure that the problems at these schools are rectified; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16073/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 264 and 265 together.

While my Department has detailed information on a substantial number of individual schools, it does not have a comprehensive, readily accessible database of information in the format requested by the Deputy.

Arrangements are being made to conduct a survey of accommodation at primary level to determine more accurately the level of need among schools. It is envisaged that every school in the State will be visited by suitably qualified personnel who will thoroughly inspect the condition and extent of accommodation of each school and compile the data on a national basis. This information will be available in the form of an electronic database and will be used to target funding more precisely where the need is greatest. Because of the comprehensive nature of the survey, the Deputy will appreciate that it will take a considerable period of time to complete.

Responsibility for health and safety is primarily a matter for the school authorities. Schools which require financial assistance towards remedial works may apply to the planning and building unit of my Department.

My Department does not have specific data on the number of schools visited by health board officials. Notifications from these officials would generally be issued to schools in the first instance.
