Vol. 521 No. 2

Written Answers. - Fisheries Protection.

Austin Deasy

Question:

52 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he has any intention of compensating fishermen whose catch is being reduced by quota restrictions and EU directives; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16769/00]

The TAC and quota system together with EU conservation and control regulations are designed to ensure that catch levels by fishermen on a year-to-year basis are maintained at levels in line with sustainability of stocks and, increasingly, in line with the precautionary principle given the vulnerability of key economic fish stocks.

I do not consider that compensation mechanisms are appropriate in relation to such measures to conserve fish stocks which are, ultimately, in the interests of the sector.
