Vol. 521 No. 2

Written Answers. - Fisheries Surveillance Measures.

John Perry

Question:

72 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources his views on the monitoring by satellite of vessels over 24 metres. [16758/00]

Under EU regulations, fishing vessels of more than 24 metres in overall length, or more than 20 metres between perpendiculars, are now legally required to carry satellite-based position monitoring terminals. Satellite monitoring is an important addition to the existing range of fisheries surveillance measures. It facilitates real time monitoring and control of all fishing activity, including the activities of other member states fleets, in Irish waters, and will enable more targeted and effective air, sea and port fisheries surveillance.

My Department is engaged in ongoing liaison with the Irish fishing industry and with the European Commission and other member states to ensure optimum effectiveness in the operation of satellite monitoring by all concerned.
