Vol. 521 No. 2

Written Answers. - Coastal Erosion.

Ivor Callely

Question:

79 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 53 on 22 March 2000 about erosion and accretion, he will outline his Department's proposals to address these issues, especially when they interfere with navigation, fishing, maritime safety and transport, marine tourism and leisure and the marine environment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16381/00]

Matters relating to coastal erosion or accretion are the responsibility of the relevant local authority in the first instance. Any proposals arising from coastal changes put to my Department by a local authority are considered carefully, by reference to the funding available to assist local authorities with such works and overall coastal management priorities. In this connection I am pleased to inform the Deputy that some £35 million has been provided in the national development plan for coastal protection, and that this funding will be allocated through focused multi-annual programmes aimed at addressing the most serious and urgent cases of coastal erosion. The programme for 2000, the largest to date, provides for expenditure of some £10 million on priority projects.
