Vol. 521 No. 2

Written Answers. - Fisheries Protection.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

88 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the species of fish which are protected or require protection to preserve stocks; if he will ensure that those countries currently causing the greatest threats to the stocks are restricted; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16942/00]

Total allowable catches are set by the EU Council of Ministers on an annual basis for a wide range of species. I am arranging to forward to the Deputy a copy of Council Regulation No. 2742/1999 which sets the TACs for 2000.

I attach a high priority to the need for enhanced conservation of stocks and I will be pursuing the matter with the commission and my EU counterparts. The Irish Sea cod recovery plan offers a new model for specific co-operative action in key fisheries under threat and we are now pressing for the introduction of specific conservation measures in relation to hake.
