Vol. 521 No. 4

Written Answers. - Shannon River Authority.

Paul McGrath

Question:

128 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Finance if he will report on the meeting with a group representing organisations and communities who are affected by the recurring flooding along the River Shannon; and if any progress has been made on appointing a Shannon River Authority. [15764/00]

At the meeting referred to by the Deputy, the Taoiseach and the Minister for Public Enterprise had a full discussion with the IFA of the issues involved in the flooding of the Shannon. It was agreed that a long-term solution for flooding in the Shannon could only be addressed in the context of the report of the Committee on Public Enterprise and Transport which is investigating the matter. In the interim, Waterways Ireland and the ESB have been asked to consider whether the arrangements for the management of water levels in the Shannon are open to improvements.
