Vol. 521 No. 4

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Phil Hogan

Question:

141 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has considered the difficulties that will be experienced at St. Luke's Hospital, County Kilkenny; if he is in a position to authorise changes of the report of the Medical Council in respect of essential anaesthesia staff and the impact this will have in the functioning of St. Luke's Hospital; the alternative action he will propose to the South Eastern Health Board to ensure that the patients of Carlow-Kilkenny will continue to get the service they require; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17078/00]

I have been in touch with the South Eastern Health Board on this matter. The South Eastern Health Board has, to date, been unable to fill all of the NCHD vacancies in the specialty of anaesthesia. The board is continuing to advertise to fill the vacant posts. St. Luke's Hospital management has met consultant staff to discuss this possible shortage of junior doctors and further meetings, to discuss the delivery of services, are planned.

The South Eastern Health Board is making every effort to ensure the continued provision of full services in the hospital.
