Vol. 521 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Seán Haughey

Question:

241 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will allocate a youth worker to a group (details supplied) in Dublin 5 under the Garda Youth Diversion Programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17402/00]

As I have previously informed the House, £16 million is being made available in the National Development Plan, 2000-2006, for the significant expansion of the Garda youth diversion programme.

At the beginning of the year, 29 Garda youth diversion projects were in existence. Last month I announced the establishment of ten additional projects as the first phase of the expansion process, bringing the current total to 39.

I expect to be in a position to announce the further expansion of the programme later this year. While the project referred to by the Deputy was not one of the ten projects announced in the first phase of the expansion, it is still under active consideration for inclusion in a subsequent phase.

I should point out that project co-ordinators who have practical experience in youth work, are employed by either the project management committees or by youth organisations. The selection of a project co-ordinator is entirely a matter for the management committee of the project in question. All appointments are made following advertisement of the positions in the national print media, and competitive interview.
