Vol. 521 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

John McGuinness

Question:

298 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the threat of closure to the arts college located at Ormonde College, Kilkenny, caused by a breakdown in communications between the college and the VEC; if he will request the VEC to allow the 50 students to continue to use the rooms at Ormonde College until suitable accommodation is acquired to secure the future of the course; and if an official from his Department will intervene and examine the accommodation which was offered but is unsuitable as it is residential-domestic and not suitable for 50 students. [17265/00]

My Department is currently working with County Kilkenny Vocational Education Committee on a development plan for Ormonde College, Kilkenny, to improve the accommodation and facilities available there.

Meanwhile, the principal of Ormonde College has made alternative accommodation available for the 22 students on the arts and crafts post leaving certificate course because in her view the prevailing conditions at Ormonde College are unsatisfactory.
