Vol. 521 No. 4

Written Answers. - State Examinations.

Paul McGrath

Question:

311 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science the rates of payment by his Department to examiners of the junior certificate and leaving certificate examination papers; and to set out those payments per subject at each level. [17346/00]

Assistant examiners appointed to mark scripts at the leaving and junior certificate examinations are paid a £100 fee together with a fee for each script marked. The script rate varies by examination, subject and subject level. I am arranging to have the Deputy provided with the full schedule of script rates.

Question:

312 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of examiners required per subject for each of the junior and leaving certificate examinations for the year 2000; the number of those who are qualified teachers and who teach those particular subjects; and the number of those examiners who have no experience of teaching those subjects and who will correct and mark exam papers in 2000. [17347/00]

I am arranging to have the Deputy supplied with a list showing the detailed breakdown of the number of examiners appointed for the 2000 examinations across each examination, subject and level. The figures for any one subject and level may vary up to the day of the examination as appointees who are unable to take up appointment are replaced from reserve lists. The final numbers will, however, be close to those presented.

In order to provide a full and accurate response to the request for other details, application forms for all 3,800 examiners would have to be individually examined again as the details requested are not stored on the computer database. At this busy time in the examination calendar, I could not justify diverting resources that are critical to the successful administration of the examinations to the task of extracting the information requested.
