Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Liam Aylward

Question:

326 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education and Science if an application has been received by his Department for the appointment of a resource teacher to a school (details supplied) in County Kilkenny; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17567/00]

To date, my Department has not received an application from County Kilkenny Vocational Education Committee for the allocation of a resource post to the school referred to by the Deputy. If such an application is received, it will be considered.

Question:

327 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education and Science if, in view of his recent announcements, he will have favourable reinvestigations made into the possible retention of a teacher to a school (details supplied) in County Kilkenny which currently has a principal and three teachers but, due to a reduction in numbers of one student, a teacher will be lost from September 2000; his views on whether this is a fair and just decision; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17568/00]

The staffing of a primary school for a particular year is determined by reference to the number of pupils enrolled in the school on 30 September of the previous year. The actual number of mainstream posts sanctioned is determined by reference to a staffing schedule. The staffing schedule is determined for a particular year fol lowing discussions with the managerial authorities and the INTO.

The current staffing of this particular school is a principal and three mainstream class teachers based on an enrolment of 89 as at 30 September, 1998. The school also has the services of a remedial teacher.

The enrolment as at 30 September 1999, on which the staffing for the 2000-01 school year is based, was 82. Under the staffing schedule, this enrolment entitles the school to two mainstream class teachers. I regret that in the circumstances it is not open to me to authorise the retention of the third mainstream teaching post into the next school year.
