Question:

90 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise when all the upgrading on the Kilcock-Dublin rail link will be completed; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17615/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 85, 86, 87, 88 and 90 together.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to previous Questions Nos. 107 and 108 of 16 May 2000.

Under the Operational Programme for Transport, 1994-1999, Iarnród Éireann is currently engaged in doubling the track between Clonsilla and Maynooth. Most of the trackwork has been replaced from Connolly Station to Kilcock. Work on these projects is progressing satisfactorily and will be completed by the end of this year.

Currently two six-car train services operate in the peak hour. This gives a capacity of 1,800. When this work has been completed it is planned to operate two additional services using eight-car train sets between Maynooth and Dublin in the peak, giving additional capacity of 2,500. These additional railcars are on order and are due to be delivered before the end of this year and will be entered into service following a period of commissioning.

The upgrading of track beyond Maynooth is almost completed.

Question:

89 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the extent to which safety standards are being met at Kilcock, Maynooth, Confey and Leixlip rail stations, with particular reference to platforms and rolling stock; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17614/00]

Minister for Public Enterprise (Mrs. O'Rourke): Day to day responsibility for all matters relating to rail safety is a matter for Iarnród Éireann.
I am advised by Iarnrod Éireann that the platform at Kilcock has now been extended and work on extending the platforms at Maynooth, Confey and Leixlip will be complete by the end of this year. The company has confirmed that all safety requirements are being met at these rail stations at all times.
Iarnród Éireann has also assured me that all rolling stock operated by the company meets all European safety standards.

91 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she has satisfied herself that adequate safety standards are at all times met on the Sallins-Hazelhatch-Dublin rail route, including stations; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17616/00]

Day to day responsibility for all matters relating to rail safety is a matter for Iarnród Éireann.

The company has informed me that all safety requirements on the Sallins-Hazelhatch-Dublin line, including stations, are being met.
