Vol. 521 No. 5

Written Answers. - Child Abduction.

Nora Owen

Question:

150 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will report on the case of an abducted person from Douglas, County Cork on 4 December 1999 (details supplied); the co-operation he is receiving from the police forces in the UK; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17783/00]

As the Deputy is aware it is not the practice of the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to comment on individual garda investigations save in the most exceptional of circumstances.

Furthermore as the Deputy will be aware, the Garda Commissioner is independent in operational matters and Garda investigations are not carried out under the aegis of my Department or any other Department of State.

All I propose to say is that I am informed by the Garda authorities that this case has been the subject of a considerable Garda investigation to date and that they will make every effort to investigate any further information which may be identified as having relevance to this case. In addition in relation to international co-operation I am informed that Interpol was notified and details were transmitted throughout the English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland police forces. I am also informed that this matter has been circulated internationally through the Interpol network.
