Vol. 521 No. 5

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John Bruton

Question:

164 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will establish a special class for two persons (details supplied) in County Meath who are autistic; if he will ensure that they receive the care and attention they deserve; if he will outline the way in which his Department propose to deal with this case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17732/00]

I am aware of the children in question. Officials of my Department are investigating this case with a view to securing a suitable educational placement for these children. Under current arrangements, children with autism have access to a range of educational support services. The precise nature of the support provided will depend on the severity of the condition in each individual case. These supports include resource teaching support in mainstream primary and post primary schools, special classes in primary schools and teaching support in special schools. Each special class, which operates at a pupil teacher ratio of 6:1, also receives the support of a special needs assistant, enhanced capitation and funding towards equipment needs.

In the particular case of children with autism, there is also a need for additional support services such as speech and language therapy and occupational therapy. The services are provided on an outreach basis through the relevant health authorities. My Department works in close co-operation with the health authorities in arranging to have these services put in place.
