Vol. 521 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Mary Coughlan

Question:

120 Ms Coughlan asked the Minister for Finance the position in relation to the provision of a new Garda barracks at the locations (details supplied) in County Donegal. [17633/00]

Regarding Ballyshannon, the Commissioners of Public Works have agreed the purchase price for a suitable site and a contract has very recently been furnished to the Chief State Solicitor's office by the vendor's solicitor. The commissioners expect to receive the contract at an early date and will sign it, if the conditions contained therein are acceptable to them and if it is approved by the Chief State Solicitor's office.

Regarding Killybegs, the commissioners advertised for a site; five replies were received but only one of the sites offered is considered suitable for a Garda station by the Garda authorities. The commissioners have been in contact with Donegal County Council about the availability of the site from a planning point of view and are awaiting the council's views in the matter.

Regarding Ballybofey and Donegal Town, feasibility studies were carried out at both of these locations to determine the possibilities of providing accommodation for the gardaí at the existing sites. The results of these studies are currently with the Garda authorities for consideration.
