Vol. 521 No. 6

Written Answers. - Commonage Division.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

43 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the approximate number of acres held in commonage throughout the country; his views on commonage ownership; and the plans he has to encourage division and separate ownership. [17658/00]

The area of land held in common throughout the country is estimated to be in excess of 500,000 hectares. For the most part, this land is privately owned and, as with any other privately owned land, decisions affecting its structure are a matter for the individual owners or shareholders themselves. I have no plans to encourage division of commonage land.
