Vol. 521 No. 6

Written Answers. - Farm Incomes.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

51 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the indicators which he used in his prediction that Irish farm incomes are set to increase in 2000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17788/00]

Prices for most of the main commodities in 2000 have been above last year's levels throughout the year to date. In addition, I expect the level of direct payments to rise this year as the increases under Agenda 2000 come into effect.

While forecasts at this early part of the year can only be tentative the combination of both positive elements is likely to lead to an increase in aggregate farm income in 2000. This projection is also supported by an independent economist.
