Vol. 521 No. 6

Written Answers. - Agricultural Sector.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

58 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the way in which he envisages the development of Ireland's agricultural sector over the next ten years; if he anticipates increased employment and/or production in this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17762/00]

The future shape of Ireland's agricultural sector will be influenced by a number of major policy developments which occurred during the last year, including the new support arrangements agreed under Agenda 2000; the White Paper on Rural Development and the national development plan.

These policy developments provide a favourable framework for development over the next several years. However, this should not lead to any sense of complacency about the future. There are challenges ahead, particularly arising from EU enlargement and a future WTO round. With a view to developing a long-term strategy for agriculture and the food industry I established the agri-food 2010 committee.
I consider that the agri-food 2010 report provides a valuable analysis of the future of the agri-food sector. I am currently undertaking a round of consultations on the report's findings and recommendations. Following the consultation process, I intend to present a comprehensive response to the report and a plan of action for implementation, to Government.
My intention is that the plan of action will form a blueprint for the future development of the sector. Obviously its implementation will be a matter not just for Government, but for all of the interests involved in the agri-food sector.
