Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - River Flooding.

Michael Ring

Question:

227 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the action that can be taken to help a person (details supplied) in County Mayo whose factory is being continually flooded by a river during periods of heavy rain in view of the fact that an official from the Western Regional Fisheries Board has not yet called to look into the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19358/00]

The chief executive officer of the Western Regional Fisheries Board informs me that he met the person concerned on 5 September 2000 regarding flooding from the Bunowen River in County Mayo. The board informs me that the Bunowen River is a spate river capable of generating flash floods. The board also informs me that it proposes to carry out general fisheries development work in the river in 2001 and a consequence of this work may be a reduction in the flood risk. The board has also suggested to the person concerned that a possible solution to the flooding problem could be the construction of a flood defence wall around his premises.
