Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Private Security Services.

Bernard Allen

Question:

328 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Defence the cost to date of private security at Murphy Barracks, County Cork; the estimated total cost of the military guard at the same location; and the reason it is necessary to have private security when a full-time military party is located at the barracks. [19219/00]

The total cost, to date, of private security at Murphy Barracks, Ballincollig, is £336,983.36, while the estimated cost of allowances, etc., in respect of the military guard posted at the industrial explosives compound located within the former barracks is £124,000. The military guard was put in place solely to secure the explosives stored in the compound while the private security firm was retained primarily to prevent trespass and wanton acts of vandalism and destruction at the former barracks, which could adversely affect the property's future saleability. The explosives compound at Murphy Barracks is expected to close in the very near future and on its closure the military guard will immediately be withdrawn from the location.
