Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Accidents

Jack Wall

Question:

355 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Defence the current position regarding the investigation into the deaths of the four Irish soldiers in a traffic accident in the Lebanon; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20598/00]

As I indicated to the House on 21 June 2000 the following investigations were undertaken into the accident which occurred on 14 February 2000, which resulted in the tragic deaths of Private Declan Deere, Private Brendan Fitzpatrick, Private Matthew Lawlor, and Private John Murphy: UNIFIL board of inquiry; Irish contingent board of inquiry; and Lebanese police inquiry.

The UNIFIL board of inquiry and the Irish contingent board of inquiry have been completed. A copy of the UNIFIL board of inquiry has been requested from the UN and is still awaited. Efforts are continuing by the military authorities to ascertain from the Lebanese authorities the current status of the Lebanese police inquiry.
