Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Constitutional Amendments.

Liz McManus

Question:

437 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Finance the total cost to the Exchequer of the 1983 referendum on the constitutional amendment regarding abortion and the 1992 referenda on the three proposed constitutional amendments relating to abortion; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20704/00]

In 1992, the three referenda on the abortion issue were held in conjunction with the general election. It is not possible to give separate costs for the three referenda. The total cost of the general election and the three referenda was £6.25 million.

The accounts for the 1983 referendum on the constitutional amendment regarding abortion were archived several years ago. My Department is conducting an extensive search for the documents concerned and I will communicate further with you when the results of that search are to hand.
