Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

464 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance the current position in relation to finalisation of agreement between the various bodies involved regarding the location of a library and other facilities, including a Garda station and youth facilities, at Confey, Leixlip, County Kildare; the precise stage of negotiations or agreement in relation to this issue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19779/00]

Emmet Stagg

Question:

487 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Finance if the Commissioners of Public Works have decided on their preferred site for the new Garda station at Leixlip, County Kildare; if so, the preferred site; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20712/00]

I propose to take Question Nos. 464 and 487 together.

Two sites, one at Confey and the other in the vicinity of Leixlip Roman Catholic Church, have been under consideration for the provision of a new Garda station in Leixlip. Both sites have been subject to particular difficulties which, if not resolved, would render them unsuitable.

A decision by An Bórd Pleanála last week has cleared the way for development of the Confey site. The Commissioners of Public Works are pressing for an early response regarding the difficulties affecting the other site.

If both sites prove to be suitable the Commissioners will select the preferred location in consultation with the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform and the Garda. It is hoped to finalise this matter at an early date.

Question No. 465 taken with Question No. 460.
