Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Social Housing.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

682 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if, in view of the serious housing crisis in Naas, County Kildare, he will now approach the Department of Defence with a view to purchasing Devoy Barracks, Naas, County Kildare, for its use for social housing schemes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19808/00]

The acquisition of land to meet local authority housing needs is a matter for individual local authorities, the funding for which can be met from local authorities own internal resources or from borrowings through the Housing Finance Agency.

I understand Devoy Barracks, Naas, County Kildare, was offered for sale by the Minister for Defence by public tender earlier this year. I further understand that as no acceptable tender was received, negotiations for the sale of the property by private treaty are now under way and that Naas Urban District Council has submitted a bid.
