Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Car Test.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

685 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the fact that motorists undergoing the national car test in Inishowen, County Donegal, have to travel single journeys of up to 60 miles due to the lack of a promised facility in the peninsula; and if he can make a statement on the matter in view of the criteria laid down for the initial tenders. [19889/00]

The tender specification for the national car testing service included a requirement that each test centre should be located within 30 miles of 90% of the car owners served by it. Testing is carried out by National Car Testing Service, NCTS Limited, at 43 centres countrywide in accordance with the contract signed with the Minister.

In addition to the level of service provided for in the contract, NCTS may be prepared to provide, in co-operation with local authorities, a number of mobile centres in remote areas. My Department is awaiting a response from the NCTS concerning the possibility of such a centre for the Inishowen Peninsula.
